Welcome back to Decode your Diagnosis
In this chapter, Paul shares how connection can be a lifeline, not just emotionally, but functionally when living with a chronic diagnosis.
You’ll hear stories of guidance from his wife, the protective role of a Functional Integration Coach, and the creation of a peer community that lifts Titans through shared strength.
This isn’t about asking for help as a last resort, it’s about building your circle with intention, courage, and alignment.
Let’s begin.
Finding Your Support Network

Facing a chronic diagnosis like cancer or prostate disease, can feel isolating. The instinct to bear the weight alone is common, but the truth is no one should navigate their healing journey in isolation. A resilient support network isn’t just a resource; it’s an integral part of the journey. It acts as a safety net during setbacks, access to knowledgeable guides when the path becomes unclear, and a source of encouragement when challenges feel insurmountable.
The moment of diagnosis is a particularly difficult time, and I must admit it was overwhelming when I was told I was at the extreme end of heart disease and considered incurable.
It’s during these moments that we need the solace of a true confidant. In my case, I have been fortunate to share a marriage of over thirty years, and my wife has been my strongest ally and closest confidant.
She knew exactly how this diagnosis would affect me. With gentle, well-timed prompting, she gave me the space to process my emotions while also offering reassurances like, “You’re not alone in this.” As the reality of the condition settled in, her consistent support reminded me of the importance of self-compassion.
At times, her observations about my mental state were instrumental in nudging me toward taking the next steps in my care. I didn’t always feel like embracing it, without her encouragement though, my journey through recovery would have been harder, slower, and less effective.
Not all support networks are created equal. The strongest ones offer more than companionship, they reflect your values, provide emotional and practical help, and align with your personal goals.
Before building the ideal support network, it’s important to assess where we are. What relationships and resources do we currently rely on, and how well do they serve our needs?
Choosing the right professional network for my decodingTeam was critical to achieving the best possible outcome. Dealing with heart disease required assembling a broad, interdisciplinary team spanning modern medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic treatment, and naturopathy.
One of the most essential figures in my decoding team is my naturopath. I refer to her as my Functional Integration Coach because she plays a pivotal role in evaluating the combined impact of all my treatments. She ensures that:
There are no overlapping medications or contraindications between my prescribed treatments.
My diet, supplements, and herbal regimens complement my medical treatments rather than conflict with them.
I maintain a holistic approach to managing the condition rather than relying on fragmented solutions.
Her careful evaluations have saved me from potential negative interactions and helped optimise my treatment plan. Having a trusted expert to oversee the broader integration of treatments has been one of my biggest assets in managing the condition.
One of the hardest parts of chronic illness is that you can’t talk about it with just anyone. There are stigmas associated with certain conditions, and sometimes, even well-meaning friends and family members struggle to relate. The result? A sense of alienation, even among those who care.
I quickly learned that to thrive, I needed to find people who truly understood my experience. That’s why I created The Titans Arena, an online community where Titans can openly share their struggles, victories, and strategies for resilience.
For those who prefer in-person connection, local support groups, fitness communities, and wellness circles can also be invaluable. I’ve found incredible support within my yoga community, where I’ve had deep and meaningful conversations with fellow Titans navigating their own health challenges.
Wherever you find your community, make sure it fosters growth, empowerment, and mutual support.
The Power of a Support Network
In the Decode Your Diagnosis framework, the Mind, Body, and Soul must remain in harmony and so must your support network. Each relationship and resource should amplify your resilience, mirroring the balance you strive for within. Building this system takes intentionality and courage, but the rewards are profound: a network that uplifts you, helps you navigate challenges, and celebrates your progress.
What Makes a Support Network Effective?
Key Characteristics of Effective Support:
Trust: You feel safe sharing your fears, hopes, and needs.
Understanding: Empathy and nonjudgmental listening create connection.
Expertise: Professional guidance, from medical advice to coaching, grounds your decisions in knowledge.
Shared Purpose: Supporters align with your values and goals, respecting your unique path.
Support comes in many forms:
Emotional Support: Comfort, validation, and a listening ear.
Practical Support: Assistance with daily tasks or planning.
Informational Support: Access to knowledge, expertise, and resources.
A balanced support network integrates all three types, creating a robust foundation for your journey.
Building your Aligned Support Network
Your support network should mirror the harmony you seek within yourself. Let’s explore how to align your network with the three pillars of decoding:
Mind: Mental Clarity and Resilience
Seek out mentors, therapists, or trusted friends who encourage growth and help you process emotions constructively.
Tools like mindfulness coaching or Titan groups can foster clarity.
Example: A friend who actively listens without judgment can ease the burden of doubt and provide perspective.
Body: Physical Health and Vitality
Build a team of reliable medical professionals, nutritionists, or fitness coaches.
Find accountability partners who motivate you to stay consistent with health goals.
Example: A workout partner or nutritionist can help you maintain energy and strength, even on tough days.
Soul: Meaning and Connection
Surround yourself with people who inspire and uplift you, whether through shared values, spirituality, or creative passions.
Look for communities or mentors aligned with your purpose.
Example: A creative group or spiritual advisor can reignite your sense of joy and fulfilment.
Fear of vulnerability, cultural expectations, and past disappointments can make building a support network challenging. Recognising and addressing these barriers is essential to creating meaningful connections.
Strategies for Overcoming Barriers
Start Small: Begin with one trusted person before expanding your network.
Seek Professional Guidance: Therapists or coaches can help you navigate trust issues or cultural expectations.
Be Intentional: Prioritise quality over quantity; deep, meaningful relationships matter more than a large network.
Building a community of like-minded Titans is vital for staying connected and maintaining resilience.
Practical Tools and Strategies
Creating and maintaining a support network requires intentional effort. These tools can help:
Creating A Support Network Map
There is an exercise at the end of the chapter to help you with this as a task. For now however;
Visualise your current network.
Include activity like exercise
Highlight areas of strength and identify gaps needing attention.
Conduct A Connection Audit
Evaluate the quality of each relationship. Ask yourself:
Does this person uplift or drain me?
Do they align with my values and goals?
Alignment Awareness
Reflect on how new connections support the alignment of your Mind, Body, or Soul:
Which Element does this person help strengthen?
How does their presence impact your alignment and well-being?
The Path Forward
Your support network is a living, evolving entity, just like your Dynamic Harmony. It bridges the gap between your internal Elements and external Forces, amplifying your ability to adapt and thrive. Relationships that once felt distant may become closer, while new connections may emerge as pivotal allies along your journey.
As you move forward, remember: a strong support network isn’t just a resource, it’s a source of transformation. Let it uplift you, guide you, and remind you that even in the hardest moments, you are never alone.
Quick Tips:
Starting Conversations: Unsure how to begin? Try, “I’ve been focusing on ways to take better care of myself and would value your perspective.”
Seeking Professional Allies: Research online or ask for recommendations from trusted sources. Take the time to find someone who aligns with your needs.
Creating a Ripple Effect: Building your resilience inspires those around you to grow as well. Your network is more than just a support mechanism, it’s a community of shared strength.
In the next chapter, we’ll explore how strengthening your Alignment Fitness can reinforce the resilience you’ve been building so your support network becomes not just a safety net, but a springboard.
Key Insight
A strong support network doesn’t just hold you up, it helps you rise. The people you surround yourself with can either drain your energy or deepen your alignment. Choose connection with intention.
Exercise: Mapping Your Support Network
List Your Network: Write down the names of people you turn to for support, advice, or comfort.
Categorise by decoding Element:
Mind: Who helps you process emotions or gain clarity?
Body: Who supports your physical health or daily tasks?
Soul: Who nurtures your sense of purpose and connection?
Evaluate Balance:
Which categories feel strong?
Which ones need more attention?
This exercise reveals gaps and highlights opportunities to expand or strengthen your network.
Practical Reflections
Who in your life helps you feel seen, heard, and understood without judgment or fixing?
Which of your current relationships feel unbalanced or depleting?
What boundaries might help?
Which decoding Element (Mind, Body, or Soul) is least supported by your current network?
What’s one intentional step you can take this week to strengthen or expand your support system?
Fama’s Sidebar
Building Your Network with Confidence
Building relationships isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection. Start small. Be intentional. Use your own judgement and reflection to guide you in choosing the right people and resources. Remember, every strong network begins with one meaningful conversation.
Closing Comments
Narrated By: Patrick Nolan
As we close this chapter, take a moment to reflect on the people around you.
Who helps you rise?
Who aligns with your values?
And where could new support make space for deeper resilience?
Paul reminds us that a diagnosis might feel isolating, but we were never meant to walk this alone.
In the next chapter, we’ll explore how to build internal strength through Alignment Fitness so your outer support network is matched by your inner capacity to rise.
