Finding True North on the Knife Edge of Time

What Happens When the Old You Fights Back

Episode Introduction

For anyone who spent decades in senior leadership, identity gets welded to the title, the output, and the always-on performance mindset. When a chronic diagnosis lands, that playbook implodes. What follows is rarely a clean rebuild. It is a slow, private argument with a voice that insists you were the problem all along.

In this episode of Sessions from the Edge, I sit down with Coach Shawn Michael, who works with high performers navigating exactly that collapse. He doesn’t trade in toxic positivity and he doesn’t sell miracle cures. We talk about identity sovereignty, performance addiction, and why treating recovery as an all-or-nothing courtroom trial keeps people stuck long after the medical crisis has passed.

Core Discussion Points

  • The Identity Hangover and Implosion: Shawn describes the gap that opens after you finally hit the target you spent years chasing, and the harder collapse that follows when a life built on masks stops holding. He shares how three years of therapy and structured group work rebuilt his self-concept from the foundation up, and why self-concept is not fixed.

  • The Feather, the Brick and the Mack Truck: Life escalates its warnings when we are misaligned. First a feather, then a brick, then a two-by-four, then something you cannot dodge. Shawn maps how he ignored every signal, and how learning to read them early is the difference between adjustment and collapse.

  • The Internal Courtroom: Why the prosecutor in your head sounds so credible, and how a relapse gets turned into a verdict on your character. Shawn separates guilt (I made a mistake) from shame (I am a mistake), and explains the secondary layer of shame that makes the roots harder to pull out later.

  • Accountability Without Surveillance: How to build a functional health team and a trusted circle that operates at peer level rather than as a monitoring system. Shawn uses the image of a dam released in stages, and explains why forgiveness does not mean leaving the door open.

Titan Takeaways and Actionable Affirmation

“You are not on trial. The voice cross-examining you is not the truth. It is the identity you are outgrowing, fighting to hold a throne it has occupied for years. You can hear it, name it, and take the next step anyway.”

  • The Thirty-Minute Horizon: When the question “how am I going to do all this” freezes you, notice that you have jumped fifty metres down the road. Bring it back. The only question that produces action is how you get through the next thirty minutes. Complete that one, then look up again.

  • The Small Release: Building a trusted circle is a staged process, not a single disclosure. Share something small first and watch what the other person does with it. If it holds, release a little more. Then give that one person explicit permission to ask you the harder question, the one that goes past “how are you today.”

The Navigator’s Insight

The prosecutor gets its power from sounding like you. That is the trick. Naming it breaks the illusion, because the moment it has a name it becomes something you are listening to rather than something you are. Paul calls his Charlie. Shawn’s teacher put it as name it to tame it. Neither of them silences the voice, and neither needs to. They just stop treating it as a verdict. You do not need a new identity by tomorrow morning. You need one honest look in the mirror and one step small enough that you will actually take it.

  • Deep Knowledge Question: How does externalising and naming the inner critic reduce the cognitive load of continuous self-monitoring during a prolonged health transition?

  • Reflection Prompt: Which part of your current story about yourself was written by someone else, and what is one small piece of evidence you could gather this week that contradicts it?
