Episode introduction
We treat emotions as noise. Something to push down, power through, or apologise for. But what if a racing heart, a wave of anger, or a morning of procrastination is not a flaw in the system. What if it is the system telling you something.
In this episode of Sessions from the Edge, Paul sits down on a Brisbane back deck with emotional intelligence coach Kerri Speyers. It is his first local home interview, with someone he has known since their children were at primary school together. Kerri’s work sits exactly where Formula for Life lives, at the meeting point of the emotional and the physical. What we feel, and fail to process, does not disappear. It gets stored in the body, and over time it shows up in our health.

Core discussion points
Emotions are information: Kerri describes a real moment when a single trigger sent her heart rate to 102 in seconds, and how ten rounds of box breathing brought it back to 76. No emotion is bad. It is the size of it, how long we sit in it, and whether we shove it down, that turns feeling into physical strain.
Fight, flight, freeze or fawn: Most of us know the fighter and the avoider. Kerri unpacks the two we talk about less. Fawning, the people-pleasing that gives up your own needs to calm a room, and freezing, the blank shutdown under too much stress. A lot of modern life, she says, is spent stuck in a nervous system running too hot.
The internal loop: Unprocessed emotion takes up bandwidth. It runs like a cliffhanger you keep replaying, and it tires you in a way sleep cannot fix, because sleep is not the problem. Tap into an old emotion you never dealt with, and you are not feeling today, you are feeling thirty years at once.
Emotionally safe people, and the ones who aren’t: Kerri names something we rarely discuss, the small percentage of genuinely toxic people who leave a lasting mark, and why recognising their patterns is the first step to setting a boundary against them.
Titan Takeaways
“Those emotions are real, they’re valid, and they’re okay. It’s when we shove them down and pretend they’re not there that the problems come.”
Set a healthy boundary: A boundary is not telling someone what to do. It is telling them what you will do. This behaviour does not work for me, and if it continues, here is my response. If you were never shown how, it is a skill you can still learn.
Coach, don’t rescue: In the drama triangle, the rescuer does the work for the victim, resents it, and the whole dance spins. Whether you are caring for someone or supporting yourself, the shift is simple. Teach the fishing. Do not fish for them.
Name what’s underneath: Procrastination is not laziness, and perfectionism is not high standards. Both are emotional, and both can be unpacked. When you find the feeling under the behaviour, the behaviour starts to change.

The Navigator’s Insight
Disease, Kerri points out, is dis-ease in the body. So much of what surfaces later was already there, stored quietly, waiting for a safe moment to be dealt with. The work is not to add more positivity on top. Toxic positivity, the endless fine, fine, great, keeps the shadow side hidden, and the gold is in the shadow side, because that is the part you can actually examine and change. Fama is built for that steady, honest work, a companion you can return to between sessions, when the emotion surfaces at two in the morning and you need somewhere to take it.
Deep knowledge question: If an emotion that lasts longer than about ninety seconds has a thought behind it, what belief might be holding your most persistent feeling in place, and where did you first learn it?
Reflection prompt: Think of one behaviour you call laziness or a character flaw in yourself. If it were an emotion asking to be heard instead, what would it be trying to tell you?
