From Fortune 500 Executive to Chronic Illness Investigator: Tracy Mansolillo on the Power of a Sovereign Path
Cipherline - Open Edition - Week 28, 2026
For Professionals Navigating Diagnosis, Stress, and Purpose in Work & Life
Some weeks feel like an open road; others, like pushing through thick fog. When a chronic condition interrupts the career and life you spent decades building, the ground beneath you shifts. It is easy to feel completely isolated, as if you are the only one wrestling with the question:
Who am I now?
This week, we are bringing you a truly remarkable story of resilience and navigation.
I recently sat down for an interview on Sessions from the Edge with Tracy Mansolillo. Tracy is a former Fortune 500 marketing executive who woke up one morning in her mid-twenties too sick to get out of bed. What followed was a 25-year battle through misdiagnoses, medical gaslighting, and a complete fracturing of her identity.
Her journey eventually led her from being a confused patient to an active caregiver for her son, and ultimately, to decoding the root cause of their illness: chronic Lyme disease.
Tracy’s story is a powerful testament to what it means to reforge your identity, build an adversity toolkit, and reclaim agency when the conventional system leaves you stranded. Below, Tracy shares her experience in her own words.
Nobody Prepares You for Redefining Moments
By Tracy Mansolillo
I recently had the pleasure of talking with Paul Cobbin, host of Sessions from the Edge. It’s a rare and wonderful opportunity to sit across from someone who has walked a similar road, someone who has decoded, aligned, and is now genuinely thriving, despite an illness or circumstance that interrupted their life. So much of what Paul has built exists for the same reason I write and speak about my experience, because so few people talk honestly about the hardest parts of chronic illness. My conversation with Paul was a reminder that none of us have to carry this alone.
My story began in my mid-twenties, when I was living my best life. I had a dream job, international travel, and a desire to succeed. I was healthy and strong, even training for my first marathon. But everything changed, virtually overnight, when I woke one October day too sick to get out of bed.
What followed was 25 years without an accurate diagnosis or treatment. I was misdiagnosed with Lupus and other conditions, gaslit by dozens of specialists who insisted my condition existed only in my mind, and forced to leave a job I loved.
My path to real answers opened up only after my son became ill with mysterious symptoms twenty years later, leading him on a 7-year health battle. From patient to caregiver, I began chasing his diagnosis and vowed to get answers. That vow eventually led us to a brilliant neurologist who identified both his illness, and mine: chronic Lyme disease, babesiosis, and other tick-borne infections, as well as a chronic autoimmune condition they left behind.
My timeline is, in many ways, what Paul’s community exists to address. It’s the space between decoding a diagnosis and learning to align your life around it.
For me, alignment didn’t come quickly, easily, or from any single breakthrough. It came from what I call my adversity toolkit, the tools that help you survive when life knocks you down. My tools include gratitude practiced daily, self-love, faith that wavered but never fully left, a redefinition of mindfulness that had nothing to do with yoga studios or guided meditation apps, a will to keep going for my son, and a new perspective of a life realigned.
I found my version of mindfulness walking with my dog, sitting near the ocean, and journaling, a habit that began in my childhood. None of it looked like the mindfulness I’d been told I was supposed to practice, and that was the point. My toolkit evolved to meet my needs through work with coaches, mentors, and professionals.
The deepest shift, though, was internal: learning to stop asking why this happened and accepting that it did, while committing to a life of presence and joy. It’s the same distinction Paul and I discuss in our communities, moving from surviving to thriving, from an illness or condition owning you, to you owning the condition.
Another shift came during a conversation with my father before he passed. He had fought for answers alongside me and asked me to start writing about what I’d learned so others might also find hope and a way forward. That promise to my father led to my Substack, The Power of Change, and a mission I didn’t expect, advocating for patients navigating Lyme disease and other invisible illnesses who have been dismissed and are searching for answers.
If there’s one thing I hope resonates from this conversation, it’s that you don’t need a tidy answer to begin realigning your life. And you don’t need to do it the way anyone else does.
Everyone’s journey is different.
My advice: begin by acknowledging where you are today. Then start to assemble the tools and practices that work for you. Find your version of mindfulness. And most importantly, when in doubt, give yourself the same grace I wish I’d given myself at 26.
